Congressional candidate David Larsen doesn't hesitate to explain where he stands on the issues. "A man is defined by how he keeps his word," says Larsen. "If elected to Congress I will be asked to take the following oath of office: 'I do solemnly swear that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter: So help me God.' I intend to uphold that oath every minute of every day that I am in office."
When asked to elaborate, Larsen offered his position on today's hot-button issues:
Government
I believe the size and scope of the federal government ought to be reduced to those powers and responsibilities specifically enumerated in the Constitution and the federal budget reduced accordingly
Taxes
I believe the current income tax system is unfair and economically destructive. It should be replaced with a flat tax or a Fair Tax that collects only the revenue necessary to support the constitutionally-authorized activities of the federal government.
Economy
I believe the free market is the only viable mechanism for prosperity in our republic; unnecessary and unconstitutional regulations which hinder it ought to be repealed so that individuals and businesses are free to achieve excellence in the market place.
Military
I believe that the highest priority of the federal government is the safety and security of the United States and to this end I believe that our military should be the best trained and best equipped in the world.
Firearms
I agree with the Founders that a well-armed citizenry is the nation's last line of defense against tyranny and therefore I support the Second Amendment right of private citizens to keep and bear firearms, whether for hunting, sporting or self-defense.
Foreign Policy
I believe the sovereignty and safety of the United States must always be preserved and defended. We should maintain close ties with our allies while making it clear to all aggressors that we will protect ourselves and our legitimate interests here and abroad.
Border Security
I believe that border security and the enforcement of immigration laws are critical components of our national defense; it is the responsibility of the federal government to accomplish this mission.
Immigration
I believe that illegal immigration should not be tolerated and that legal immigration should be carefully regulated to ensure the proper assimilation of new arrivals in order to preserve the unity of our language and culture.
Religion
I believe that while the Founders wisely prohibited Congress from establishing a religion, they never intended to remove all traces of religious expression from the federal government or the public sector.
Abortion
I firmly believe in the sanctity of innocent human life from conception to natural death. The Constitution makes no provision for a right to have an abortion and I believe the Roe vs Wade decision made by the U.S. Supreme Court should be overturned.
Gay Marriage
I believe that marriage is a social and a spiritual contract between a man and a woman that is the foundational bedrock of a stable, civilized society. I support the Defense of Marriage Act and will oppose any federal legislation that seeks to legalize gay marriage.
Education
I believe that a well-educated citizenry is critical to the health of our republic. However, the Constitution does not authorize Congress to create policy or appropriate revenues for this purpose; public school education is best left to the states and municipalities.
Environment
I believe that while the earth exists for humanity, we have a responsibility to use its resources wisely. I support reasonable legislation and regulations that achieve this end and oppose regulations that favor the environment at the expense of the people's liberty, safety or security.
