After a tumultuous and bruising primary campaign dominated by a slugfest between the incumbent, Leonard Lance, and front-running challenger David Larsen, the voters of the 7th Congressional district in New Jersey went to the polls on June 8 and rendered their verdict: a majority of 56% handed Mr. Lance a second term in Congress. Mr. Larsen came in second with 31% while Lon Hosford garnered just 8% and Bruce Baker eked out only 5%.
A message from David Larsen:
Shortly before 11 PM last night the battle to return the 7th Congressional district back to the people and to the rule of the Constitution drew to a close after the votes were tabulated and I conceded the election to Leonard Lance.
The contest was hard-fought by both sides and, given the advantages enjoyed by the incumbent and the tactics he chose to employ, I'm pleased to say that our campaign comported itself with fairness and grace: although we were not victorious, we nevertheless garnered a third of the vote and put Mr. Lance on notice that We the People of District 7 are watching him and will remain silent no longer.
We the People understand that the blueprint for the greatest nation in the history of mankind - drafted by extraordinary men guided by Divine Wisdom - designated the House of Representatives to echo the voice of the people, not the clamor of power-hungry partisans and money-hungry special interests.
The Founders believed – as I believe now – that Congress should be made up of citizen legislators whose livelihood is based on their own hard work, not perpetual re-election to office and whose mission is governed by the Constitution, not their own ambition. The Congressional seat for which I and others who cherish the Constitution campaigned belongs to You the People, not they the politicians and bureaucrats.
Sadly, a lot has changed since the early days of the republic: the federal government has grown out of control and threatens to spend us into bankruptcy. Congress has become the corrupt playground of career politicians and completely deaf to the voice of the people they are supposed to represent.
Over and over - long before this election - I have heard people lament that America’s worst days have arrived and any hope of a bright and prosperous future for our children no longer exists. When I could no longer bear to witness Barack Obama and the Democrat Party destroying this great nation I decided to run for Congress. I had no desire apart from becoming a voice for the people – YOUR voice – and despite this setback, I nevertheless remain committed to doing everything in my power to restore liberty and prosperity to their rightful place in the American Dream. Like Ronald Reagan - the greatest President of the 20th century - I believe in my heart that America's best days are still ahead of her and my dedication to making that vision a reality will never falter.
I am humbled to be a part of this election because it would not have been possible without the support of God in Heaven and patriots on earth. I thank the Lord for His many blessings and for the comfort, the strength and the guidance He has given me throughout this campaign. I thank my beloved wife Donna and our daughters for their love, their devotion and their unwavering support.
My faithful and extraordinarily efficient staff and volunteers will always have my deepest respect and heartfelt gratitude for the loyalty they have shown me and the enthusiasm with which they conducted this often exhausting campaign. Not once did I ever hear a murmur of complaint or a sigh of weariness and I will never forget the many hours of selfless devotion they sacrificed for this noble cause.
From the bottom of my heart I thank all of you who encouraged me, donated to my campaign and cast your ballots for me. Words cannot adequately express my gratitude for your support. Keep alive the flame of faith in both God and the cause of liberty, my friends.
This isn't the end or even the beginning of the end - rather, it is the end of the beginning of the battle for the heart and soul of this great republic. On to victory!
God bless you all and may God continue to bless America!
